"Hands-On" Days Lead to Application Process at Career Centers

Sophomore students from high schools in Belmont and Harrison Counties are invited to visit the Belmont and Harrison Career Centers for "hands-on" experience in career-technical education. An open house will be held at the Belmont Career Center on December 11 and 12, while the Harrison Career Center will host visitors December 4.

Instructors and students at the centers will introduce sophomores to career-technical programs at both schools.

On arrival in the mornings, sophomores will be given a tour of the buildings and the labs of the programs offered. Following the tour, students will be able to schedule four programs of interest in which to receive "hands-on" training. As they move through the career-technical programs, they will work with tools, machines, computers and equipment necessary to be employed in those areas.

Bill Glitch, Marketing Coordinator for the centers, is visiting sophomores at the local high schools during November to explain career options available at the centers, showing a school video, and addressing questions and concerns about career-technical education.

The "hands-on" days are arranged through the guidance departments of the local high schools. They include Mark Brown, Barnesville; Joe Bell, Bellaire; Vicki Falcone, Bridgeport; Todd Dunlap, Harrison Central; Robert Dalton, Martins Ferry; Gary Watt, St. Clairsville; Carrie Ramsay, St. John Central; Ken Steiner, Shadyside; Kevin Lucas, Union Local; and Penny Shane, Belmont Career Center and Brandi Besozzi, Harrison Career Center.

Students may obtain applications from their guidance counselors for enrollment at the career centers for next school year after the "hands-on" days. Application deadline is set for March 1, 2014. Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible because all programs are based on first come, first serve. Once a program is full, students will be put on a waiting list.

For further information, please contact the Belmont Career Center at (740) 695-9130, or the Harrison Career Center at (740) 942-2148.
