HCC Students Win State Championship

Two students, Max Hall and Gary McAfee, Jr., in the Agricultural Mechanics (Diesel) program at the Harrison Career Center, won the state Agricultural Diagnostic Competition held at the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima on March 4.

The students first qualified for the state competition by winning at the district level at Kuester Implement Company in Midvale, Ohio. First place teams from ten district events throughout Ohio, along with five second place teams, advanced to the state level.

Students competed as two-person teams to troubleshoot different equipment problems. There were five stations with two problems per piece of equipment. Students had 20 minutes to diagnose and repair the problems at each station. Points were awarded for correct diagnosis and repair, as well as, each minute they finished under the allotted 20 minutes. A written test was also incorporated that each student completely individually.

Hall and McAfee each received a $10,000 scholarship to the University of Northwestern Ohio. They will also receive an award, school banner and be recognized at the State FFA Convention in May.

"It took a lot of hard work and practice, but it paid off," noted instructor Alan Albright. "Myself and the school are very proud of these young men," he added.
